Must-See Films For True Horror Fans

I have been a fan of the horror genre since I was a kid. At first, it was the classic black and white movies like Nosferatu, Dracula, Wolfman & Frankenstein..And then, when I was eleven, I saw the trailer for Friday the 13th..It would be a while before I could actually see it, but I was immediately intrigued.. I remember the first time I watched Evil Dead with my Sister when I was fourteen, & at fifteen I watched Nightmare on Elm Street with some friends..Every chance I got, I watched horror..nothing was too scary for me ! As I got older, those types of movies, as much as I loved them, became more & more predictable, and far less scary. So I went out of my way to find horror films that were different. This became much easier when the internet came around! My extensive searching has led me to discover some excellent films, including some very good foreign horror films. Horror films from other countries are so different from American horror. Asian, Australian, & French seem to be my favorites. Asian films, more often than not, scare the crap out of me.(And that is no small task!! )I have seen so many horror films in my time, it is very unusual for anything to actually scare me.(which really sucks, since I watch them because I WANT to be scared!!)..

This is a small list I put together of some of the more unique films I have found..(many of them with very well known stars in them!)

Be warned, some of these may be more gruesome or disturbing than what you are used to ! (If you are a fan of truly gruesome and disturbing films, keep in mind, this is not my "most disturbing" list.. I will be putting that one together soon, & some of these films may be on that list also..)

This is my list of films that true horror fans should all at least have the opportunity to experience..

Enjoy!

(These are in no particular order..)

May

(2002)

(Starring Jeremy Sisto

& Anna Faris )

A lonely young woman traumatized by a difficult childhood and her increasingly desperate attempts to connect with the people around her is sent into a murderous tailspin. This is such a quirky, weird, twisted movie..& pretty gory, so be warned..but it is one of the best psychological thriller/horror films ever made.

Catacombs

(2007)

The producers of Saw shine a little darkness on the City of Lights in this grim thriller about a naïve American visiting her sister in Paris, and the horror that unfolds as they descend into the city's vast Catacombs for a wild underground rave. Victoria (Shannon Sossamon) has never been to Paris, but when her sister Carolyn (Alecia Moore/P!NK) invites her to an upcoming party, the prospect of living it up in the most romantic city on Earth proves too powerful to resist. Shortly after arriving in Paris, Victoria and Carolyn venture deep into the 200-mile limestone labyrinth constructed with the bones of seven million Parisians. Later, after getting separated from her friends, the frightened American can't help shake the feeling that someone - or something - is stalking her every move; just waiting for the perfect moment to spring forth from the darkness.

(2010)

From Australia, & Starring Xavier Samuel & Sophie Lowe, this supernatural thriller is about a group of teenagers menaced by a driver-less train in the Australian outback. Rigor Mortis

Geung si (original title)

(2013)

(Hong Kong- directed by Juno Mak, and also produced by Takashi Shimizu. The film is a tribute to the "Mr. Vampire" film series. )

A public housing tenement is plunged into a dark storm of supernatural chaos.

First of all, something you should know is just how much I truly hate subtitles in movies. They are just so damn distracting..But with this film..WOW..I got so engrossed in this film right away, it was almost as if the subtitiles were not even there. If you are a fan of the vampire genre, this is a must-see, but honestly the cinematography in this film is so beautiful and the story is so unique, i recommend everyone see is !!

Just check out the Trailer

The Voices

(2014)

(Starring:

Ryan Reynolds

& Anna Kendrick)

A likable guy pursues his office crush with the help of his evil talking pets, but things turn sinister when she stands him up for a date. I am amazed at how many people do not know about this one...It has 2 pretty big stars in it, after all !! It is a horror comedy, and Ryan Reynolds is delightfully nuts, but it is still a very sick & twisted film!!

Livid

(2011)

Livide (original title)

A French supernatural horror film written and directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. It is their follow-up to the horror film Inside. This movie mixes Argento style Giallo with creepy, old house tension. The suggestion of a big treasure hidden somewhere inside a once renowned classical dance academy will become an irresistible lure to a fiendish trap for Lucie and her friends. They encounter a series of supernatural events that change them forever. This is probably my favorite foreign horror film of all time. I can't tell you much about it because words cannot quite describe why it is so good. You just need to see it for yourself.
